These daily ramblin's are a bit of fun. They're also a great exercise in songwriting. At Steve Earle's Camp Copperhead a couple of years ago, Steve challenged everyone to write a haiku a day for a year. I did pretty well with that, but for the past couple of months, I have been posting one a day along with a short story or ramblin' musings.

Traditionally, the Japanese Haiku have a season mentioned, alluded to, described or something. Since mostly, I start these in one of my song writing books or in an app., I usually forgo the seasonal reference. This exercise, the way I am doing it, is to be able to convey what I want to say in 14 syllables. The rhythm of each line starts to feel like a waltz. I'm usually rocking in my chair as I write, and count, sometimes rhyme, most times not. One of my recent songs is entirely Haiku. Two make up each verse.
