“Well, that’s the way we’ve always done it.”
Why?
“Because that’s the way we’ve always done it.”
Often my reply in situations like this is, “The monkeys want to stay dry.” I am usually met with something like, “What the h_ck are you talking about?”
Here’s where that came from. In an experiment, five monkeys were placed in a cage. In the middle of the cage was a ladder with a bunch of bananas at the top. Every time one of the monkeys tried to go up the ladder to get the bananas, the other monkeys were sprayed with cold water. They learned not to climb the ladder to get the bananas. Also, they learned not to let other monkeys attempt to climb the ladder to get the bananas. The monkeys want to stay dry.
One of the monkeys was replaced. The other monkeys kept the replacement from going after the bananas. When a second monkey was replaced, the first replacement joined with the others in keeping the latest replacement from going after the bananas. This continued until each of the original five monkeys had been replaced.
Then there were five monkeys that knew not to go after the bananas and also to keep others from climbing the ladder to get the bananas. None knew why. That’s the way we’ve always done it.
