Got Gas? (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)

For Real? Four reels and one extra spool. I haven’t been able to explain to Kari why I need four reels … and four fly rods. She gets that same glazed-over look that I have when she talks about kiln settings for firing clay pottery.

It is necessary to have a three-weight rod to cast a three-weight line. I need a three-weight reel to hold the three-weight line onto the three-weight rod.

She usually glazes over when I get to the part about, “I’ve washed the dishes, mowed the yard, vacuumed the carpet, taken out the garbage, washed and changed the sheets, bathed, fed and walked the dog, can I get a new fly rod?” "For real?” she says. I didn’t know what reel she was talking about.

Honestly, I don’t need another fly rod. I’m just staying in practice for when I do.

“Honey, have you seen my five-weight reel?” I ask. She replies, “Don’t they all sorta look the same?” Do you see what I’m dealing with here?

I’ve done all my chores.

Peace, Y’all!
