Good and bad, this is a most interesting time in the history of the American States (formerly known as the United States of America) for many reasons.
After the Civil War, in 1865 the United States became singular. Now go ahead and ask me what that means.
Prior to the Civil War, plural verbs were used when referring to the United States. For example, “The United States are ...." Late 19th century, that evolved to be “The United States is …. "
Amy Klobuchar, as part of the Inauguration of President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., said, “This is the day when our Democracy picks itself up, brushes off the dust and does what America always does, goes forward as a Nation, under God, with Liberty and Justice for All!” (Thunderous applause)
