Bull Crap

I wrote yesterday about Midway, Florida. Today, I want to talk about Bull Scrape, or Bullscrape Gap, North Carolina. At elevation 3,882 feet, Bull Scrape Gap is in the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Eastern Continental Divide.

Around 1911, parts of Burke, Caldwell, and Mitchell Counties decided to elope and make their own county. They all gathered around the headwaters of the North Estatoe River at a place known as Old Fields of Toe.

Old Fields of Toe became Newland, the new County Seat for Avery County. Nearby residents of Bullscrape Gap decide a much better name for their town would be Montezuma. They may have foreseen a shortage of the letter “s."

Welcome to Bull Crap

Welcome to Montezuma.

Changed names, smells the same.

Peace, Y'all!
